Some voices comfort the world. Others confront it.

The Khalid Abdul Muhammad Tee honors one of the most commanding and controversial voices in modern Black nationalist history. Known for his uncompromising delivery, Muhammad spoke forcefully about racism, Black self-determination, political betrayal, and the conditions facing African people throughout the diaspora.

Muhammad rose to national prominence as a minister and national spokesman for the Nation of Islam under Minister Louis Farrakhan. After leaving the organization, he became national chairman of the New Black Panther Party, where he continued advocating Black unity, independence, community protection, and resistance to white supremacy.

In 1993, a fiery speech Muhammad delivered at Kean College ignited a national controversy. His remarks were denounced as racist, antisemitic, anti-Catholic, and inflammatory. In 1994, the United States Senate voted 97–0 to condemn the speech, followed by a 361–34 vote in the House of Representatives on House Resolution 343.

Yet Congress did not—and constitutionally could not—erase his words. The resolutions condemned the content of his speech without criminalizing or banning it. The moment became a powerful example of American free speech in action: one person may express an unpopular or offensive position, while others retain the equal right to challenge, criticize, and condemn it.

This statement tee captures that tension. It is not about agreeing with every word Khalid Abdul Muhammad ever spoke. It is about remembering the power of the spoken word, preserving controversial Black history, and defending the right to question systems, confront injustice, and speak without fear.
